Add Comment Can Massage Help Breast Cancer Survivers? 01/08/2010
Interesting article on breast cancer survivers and a new massage therapy technique that is being tested. There is nothing scarier than the "C" word. In fact in our grandparents days no one would even say the word. It was almost like it "might" bring bad luck. No one knows that more than a woman who hears the dreaded words, "You have breast cancer". Just typing these words gives me a lump in my throat. In this article at WDNU.com they talk about how a new technique in massage therapy is giving many woman hope for the first time. The therapy revolves around asome tools that were developed for something called the GRASTON technique that have been effective in working with those who have received sports injuries in the past. Doctors a the Centre P.C find that it ALSO breaks down the scar tissue in the breasts that cause a lot of pain. Notice what the DR says: "We know that massage is good for blood supply, we know it's good for scar tissue, so if we can employ massage techniques in and around the reconstructive area, or even the donor site, we can expedite healing," said Dr. Downs. Therapist Barb Ditmer says the tools make all the difference. "We have found that if we perform massage manually using the tools it causes microtrauma, which helps break down and restructure the tissue," said Barb. For Tracy, who thought she was facing another surgery, the Graston Therapy has meant all the difference in the world. "You would think it would hurt, but it doesn't," said Tracy. "It feels good like your body needs it. Dr. Downs believes the technique is working. He says, "they're getting tremendous relief from this."
